Maritime Cooperation in the Gulf of Aden
Indian Navy News – On April 4, 2025, the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Tarkash conducted a Passing Exercise (PASSEX) with the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Anzac-class frigate HMNZS Te Kaha in the Gulf of Aden.
The exercise, part of the New Zealand-led Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) Joint Focused Operation ANZAC Tiger, aimed to enhance interoperability between the two navies.
Interoperability Drills and Tactical Maneuvers
The PASSEX featured a range of drills, including cross-deck landings, cross-boarding, Sea Rider exchanges, and tactical maneuvers, all integrated with communication procedure exercises.
These activities allowed both navies to exchange best practices and strengthen operational coordination, ensuring seamless collaboration in maritime operations.
Culmination of Operation ANZAC Tiger
The exercise marked the conclusion of Operation ANZAC Tiger, a Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) initiative running from March 27 to April 4, 2025, focused on maritime security and anti-smuggling operations.
INS Tarkash, deployed in support of CTF 150, played a key role, including a significant drug bust of 2386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin, valued at NZ$181 million.
Strengthening India-New Zealand Ties
The PASSEX, dubbed #BridgesofFriendship, underscored the strong bilateral relationship between India and New Zealand.
The Indian Navy’s participation reaffirmed its role as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region, fostering regional stability and maritime cooperation.
Continued Regional Engagement
Following the PASSEX, INS Tarkash continues its mission in the western Indian Ocean, supporting CTF 150 operations. The successful collaboration with HMNZS Te Kaha highlights the Indian Navy’s commitment to global maritime security and its growing partnership with the Royal New Zealand Navy.
