Indian Navy News – The keel laying ceremony for Yard 3039, the third Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., took place on April 11, 2025, in Kolkata.
The event was graced by Shri Sugata Ghosh Dastidar, IDAS, Financial Advisor (Defence Services), as the Chief Guest, alongside Cmde P R Hari (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE, and senior representatives from the Indian Navy and the shipyard.
The ceremony marks a key milestone in the indigenous design and construction of 11 NGOPVs, contracted on March 30, 2023, with Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL) and GRSE. GSL, the lead shipyard, will build seven vessels, while GRSE, the follow-on shipyard, will construct four.
These advanced vessels, with an approximate displacement of 3,000 tons, are designed to enhance coastal defense, surveillance, search and rescue operations, offshore asset protection, and anti-piracy missions.
The NGOPV project aligns with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, reinforcing the Indian Navy’s maritime capabilities through self-reliant shipbuilding.
The keel laying of Yard 3039 underscores the steady progress toward bolstering India’s naval strength and securing its maritime interests.
