Indian Army News, New Delhi, April 3, 2025 – Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flagged off three ambitious mountaineering expeditions to Mount Everest (8,848m) and Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586m) from South Block, New Delhi, showcasing India’s prowess in high-altitude adventure and fostering Indo-Nepal ties. The expeditions, comprising Indian Army and National Cadet Corps (NCC) teams, aim to inspire youth and reinforce India’s leadership in mountaineering.
Indian Army’s Everest Expedition
The Indian Army’s Mount Everest expedition consists of 34 climbers, led by Lieutenant Colonel Manoj Joshi.
Following the traditional South Col Route in Nepal, the team will navigate the challenging Khumbu Valley and high-altitude camps, targeting a summit push by May 2025.
This expedition underscores the Army’s resilience and skill in extreme conditions.
Joint Indo-Nepal Kangchenjunga Climb
A joint Indo-Nepal expedition to Mount Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, features 12 Indian Army mountaineers and six from the Nepali Army, led by Colonel Sarfaraz Singh.
This collaborative effort strengthens military and cultural bonds between the two nations, with climbers aiming to conquer the 8,586m summit by May 2025.
NCC’s Historic Everest Mission
The NCC expedition to Mount Everest, led by Colonel Amit Bisht, includes 10 cadets (five girls and five boys), four officers, and 11 instructors.
This diverse team aims to make history by showcasing youth participation in high-altitude mountaineering, inspiring future generations with their courage and teamwork.

Addressing the mountaineers, Shri Rajnath Singh praised their courage, dedication, and determination. “These expeditions will inspire the youth and underscore India’s leadership in high-altitude mountaineering,” he said, expressing confidence in their success.
The event saw the presence of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma.
