Indian Navy News, Karwar – In a significant boost to India’s maritime diplomacy and regional security initiatives, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flagged off INS Sunayna from Karwar Naval Base on April 5th 2025, marking the commencement of the Indian Ocean Ship Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) mission.

Strengthening Maritime Security
The INS Sunayna, an offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Navy, embarked on its mission to enhance maritime cooperation and ensure stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The SAGAR initiative underscores India’s commitment to fostering peace, security, and sustainable development among IOR nations.
Raksha Mantri’s Address
Speaking at the event, Shri Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of a rules-based maritime order.
“INS Sunayna’s deployment under SAGAR reflects India’s vision of being a responsible maritime power, ensuring safety and prosperity for all in the region,” he said.
He lauded the Indian Navy’s role in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and anti-piracy operations.
INS Sunayna’s Mission Objectives
The mission involves port calls to friendly nations, joint exercises, and capacity-building programs. INS Sunayna will engage with regional navies to strengthen interoperability and address shared challenges like

- trafficking, and
- illegal fishing.
The vessel is equipped with advanced surveillance and communication systems to support these objectives.

Launched in 2015, the SAGAR initiative promotes collective growth and security in the IOR. INS Sunayna’s deployment aligns with this vision, reinforcing India’s role as a first responder and trusted partner in the region.
